Bassy, during the interview with Complex. He really puts on for the Bay Area so having him on my first official single really kept it right." Although the album is cohesive with an undertone concept of what G-Eazy is feeling, where it fails is it struggles to impose any real form of originality."G-Eazy and I have developed a good chemistry working together on his album and touring. Or a radio-friendly release from Eminem, as mentioned previously, with leading single ‘ Me, Myself & I‘. It wouldn’t be so far-fetched to say that When It’s Dark Out could be mistaken for a Big Sean album as the ‘ Intro‘ and ‘ Random‘ alone share a lot of qualities with Dark Sky Paradise. He should have focused more on enforcing his own style and sound. ![]() This goes to show with his and Starrah’s poor attempt at making a Drake-esque track with ‘ Order More‘ that just feels misplaced on the album. For most of his career this has worked, but sometimes you have to realise you can’t please everyone. One minor issue on this album though, seems to be that G-Eazy is trying to please so many people with different sounds that it’s sometimes hard to pin-point an iconic style to G-Eazy. But Gerrald doesn’t leave out his arrogant tongue in cheek as most of album includes witty wordplay that forces you to think twice. Also, ‘ Nothing To Me‘ featuring E-40 and Keyshia Cole, hears G-Eazy reminisce and give retrospect to his career. ‘ What If‘ featuring Grizzle hears a side of G-Eazy that’s conscious to his surrounding asking “ what if” to everything from Americain history to the choices he made through his career. Known for his arrogant “ I’ma steal your girl” attitude, G-Eazy makes room for some food for thought with his retrospective lyricism. While the production makes the album a joy to listen to, it’s G-Eazy’s maturity in his lyrics that makes this album his best work to date. He shows this again when teaming up with Young Chop for their short club track ‘ Calm Down‘ as it embraces The Bay Area sound that DJ Mustard has recently commercialised. While the trap influenced instrumentals serve as the “ turn-up” tracks, G-Eazy shows he’s versatile with Bebe Rexha in ‘ Me Myself & I‘ a softer crowd pleaser that sounds like a modern take of an Eminem and Rhianna collaboration. ![]() Beats like ‘ Random‘, ‘ One Of Them‘ and ‘ You Got Me‘ all share a typical Atlanta trap sound, but with an atmospheric feel that makes them feel unique. In our interview, Young Gerald said this new project is, “ something of a concept album” with a “ cohesive feel and message throughout it.” and cohesive is exactly the right word as the instrumentals naturally flow into one another.Įven though we’ve come to expect this from The Bay Area artist, When It’s Dark Out’s production has more of a professional and smoother feel.
